The CrossFit Basics class is designed to help you become more familiar with CrossFit movements and to help build your fitness to the level needed to enter into regular CrossFit classes. Your CrossFit Basics class will teach you the 9 functional movements listed below. You will have a dedicated coach in each class working on your fitness and ability to perform these basic CrossFit movements.
These are the nine functional movements of CrossFit. These are all important, integral components of CrossFit and they all work your body in different ways.
Becoming proficient in the more elementary moves, such as the deadlift, squat and press can more easily help an athlete progress to more complex and difficult movements. Each of these movements are the building blocks or everything you do in CrossFit. The great thing about them is that you can ALWAYS make gains. You will see your body change in ways you never thought possible and you will become stronger in your everyday life.
So then why the 9 fundamental exercises? Why master them first? Not only do these exercises form the foundation of CrossFit and the basis of progression to more complex movements, they are also functional in the sense that they are naturally what our bodies are meant to do; it’s part of our DNA. These movements are universal in that they are found everywhere, in everything you do from housework to Firefighting. Jumping, pushing, pulling, throwing, running, climbing…movements that mimic what you do in life as opposed to lateral raises, flyes or leg curls…which are non-functional and artificial.
We squat down to pick up a heavy box of books; we press a small child up into the air while playing; or we deadlift a piece of furniture with a friend during a move. These movements are also safe when done with correct form (safer than movements done on machines at the globo gym). All of these movements are compound yet irreducible. What does this mean? They are multi-joint, multi-muscle group movements, and irreducible in the sense that we cannot break the movement down into pieces to get the same results.
As an example, have you ever watch a body builder run? They seem to be disjointed and not quite moving in the right way. That is because they train all of the body parts separately with different type of movements such as biceps curls and leg extensions. These focus only on the one body part and do not teach your body how to move as an athlete. Olympic lifting and other CrossFit movements teach you how to move multiple muscles and joints as a whole therefore increasing your athleticism and overall body awareness. Simply put…you become a better version of who you used to be…you become an athlete.
While CrossFit focuses on make you a better version of who you are from a body movement perspective, CrossFit Carmel as a community is here to provide you with the other half of what you make you a balanced person. We provide you the opportunity to develop healthy relationships with other like-minded individuals with whom you can share your pursuit of a better life.
Having a community that shouts and cheers at your accomplishments is the best part of CrossFit. Need someone to push you that extra step when you are completely done or to help you pick you up on a day when you just don’t feel like it. We will do that for you. We will be your community.
Here is one our CrossFit Carmel events. It is our annual G.L.O.C (Gorgeous Ladies Of Competion) competition that brings Crossfitting women from all over the Midwest and beyond.
